the visual interpretation of scent.
before sunrise
Lizzy Tsuehara felt there was something missing in fragrance.
Selecting just one felt impossible and unsatisfying in its ability to be fully embodied.
It suddenly became a personal endeavor to scavenge the internet for niche fragrances to stack, curiosity luring her into a tunnel-vision escapade.
The Desire: To build a scent profile that encapsulated a visceral atmosphere, with inspiration drawn from a daydream of visiting the California coast.
Tsuehara Studio’s dissertation is a visual and conceptual study in scent as environment. Combining the profiles of different fragrances can construct emotional climates rather than offer singular impressions.
This project investigates how fragrance can serve as an atmospheric lens, influencing a way of being in the world.

Project Summary
Olfactory Experience:
Scandola murmured with fresh sea mist. Zen. Still. Minimal. Cliffs interrupted by wind, a pause before breath.
Muguet Fleuri was a run through a field composed by lily of the valley. An ode to playfulness, whispers in long grass hills.
Mistpouffer was found to be curious and sweet, delegating its prominence to more heart-open days or sensual moods,
Orange Essence settled into soft, bright, feminine. A grounding, luminous anecdote when the air was heavy. “A second skin.”
In turn, a ritual can be made, tempered to the day's disposition.
Purpose:
To create something that wasn't to be doused but adorned in.
Your own personal climate, a presence not met in wafts but instead in quiet reveals. It allows one to adjust to sensibility.
These scents facilitated sensory language.
Production:
- Sourcing sample vials
- Handmade set props
- Two designated shot locations

Movement As Melody
It was the salty winds from the sea striking the cliffs right upon shore, ushering out the night’s drumming pour.
Winter turning into spring, spring into summer.
Night into morning.
The forest surrounding ricocheted with the dryness of green leaves and the bells' ring of tiny pearl flowers.
Hovered in suspension, coastline drift.
Golden light in a veil of cool mist, emerging from the horizon and giving way to hushed cheeks.
What is the first breath you take when you waken?
A clarifying inhale,
exhale turns to vapor among the wistful silence.
Relief collapses on its side as something short of joy, vibrating the corneas of your eyes.
The sun blooming into beam.
Warming pause echoed into flecks of fog,
The ocean keeping pace with the hum of stillness.
You feel sort of lively, winded and rejuvenated. Restless with inspiration, though a gaze occupied by fluttering eyes.
A calmness pressed into your bones should you wonder if you were still dreaming.
